Indeed, Prostate Cancer is one of those dreaded diseases that effects men. With today’s technology and medical advancement, prostate cancer can now be treated. Some of the best treatments have been identified to successfully eradicate cancer cells in the prostrate. These include radiation therapy, surgery, and hormone therapy along with pain control medicines. However, aside from these medical treatments there are alternative ones that some prostate cancer patients may want to consider.

As you may have known prostate cancer is a cancer of the small walnut-shaped gland in males where production of seminal fluid containing the sperm cells takes place. The cancer cells in the prostate may spread to other areas of the body thus early detection is deemed to be very essential. Now, if the cancer is identified to be local, the patient is given various treatment options to choose from.

Surgical procedure used to be the common way of treating cancer. This involves the removal of the cancerous prostate called prostatectomy. There is also the removal of the patient’s testicles or orchiectomy. This is recommended when the patient is undergoing hormone therapy, another treatment option for prostate cancer patients. In this procedure, cancer cells are spared from getting the “food” or hormones they need to exist. These hormones include estrogen and progesterone which are the cancer cells’ favorite food. Now, to ultimately starve and kill the cancer cells, the testicles as the main source of hormones, must be removed.

Another treatment option for prostate cancer is radiation therapy. This procedure utilizes high-energy x-rays which can be administered in two ways. The first is beamed directly at the cancer site of the body. The second is to have radioactive seeds implanted in the prostate. Both are non-surgical procedures and assist in killing the cancer cells. The external beam is used in cases where the cancer cells had already spread and is covering a wider area in the pelvis region. Also, radiation therapy is good at shrinking the tumor to assist with pain control.

Available alternative treatment for prostate cancer includes the intake of natural herbs which claims to have medicinal or therapeutic effects that basically fights this disease. There are also special diets that the patient may undergo with as well as practices or activities like meditations and yoga that is believed to have curative effects in the body.

So, whatever treatment option you need to undergo with, the staging of the disease and location of it becomes the basis in deciding on which option may work better for you. It is always best to equip yourself with the knowledge of this disease and its available treatment along with the guidance of your doctor to provide you complete cure in the end.
